Author's Note: Credit where credit's due, the idea for this story was conceived after reading EROD37's 'Intervention' (on HGForever), and combined with elements from Robert Jordan's WoT-series it kinda worked itself out in my head.

"Harry!"
Hermione’s scream pierced through the night and easily overcame the noise of the battle all around them. Harry glanced a quick look over his shoulder and cursed under his breath. Ron had just been paralyzed by his opponent, and the sight of him falling down had obviously startled Hermione. He sighed. Sometimes he wondered why he still took them along. He felt like he spent more time protecting them than benefiting from their help.
With a reflexive movement he evaded the hex his own opponent threw at him and he shot his own petrifying curse back. He barely registered the hit as he turned around immediately and faced the situation behind him. For some reason, the Death Eater who had overcome Ron hadn’t snuck up on him, as he had expected him to do; instead, he had teamed up with Hermiones opponent to scissor the young witch between them.

"Avadr-" the one to her left started as the other lunged for her right arm. Ignoring him, Harry thought Expelliarmus and pointed at the left one. Unfortunately, his spells were still weaker when he used them nonverbal, and the Death Eater managed to hold on to his wand, though barely.
The surprise is spoilt anyway Harry thought as he yelled: "Paralitis!" and saw the man’s body fall backwards. He turned to the other Death Eater and noticed how the man had managed to physically overcome Hermione and was now using her as a human shield.
She should have known better he thought absentmindedly. Her emotional attachment to Ron is making her a liability. His face showed nothing however as they looked at each other. The man’s mask didn’t show much of his face except for his eyes, and Harry could see the apprehension in them.
Clearly, after witnessing how his four companions were disabled in a matter of minutes, he doubted his chances of escape even with a hostage. Can't wait to see his face when he realizes he doesn’t even have a hostage Harry thought to himself.

"Let me go! Let me go or I’ll hurt her!" the man yelled while pointing his wand threateningly at Hermione’s head. She, for her part, was looking at Harry, sobbing silently, as her eyes shone with fear. Fear, a portion of Harry’s mind realized, for him. It suited him just fine.
The Death Eater looked at him doubtfully. Obviously, the man wondered why he hadn’t responded. Harry decided to indulge the man, if only because he was tired and wanted to get back to the Dursley’s home.
"Paralitis!" Harry roared, aiming his wand from his hip at the Death Eater’s face. He could see Hermione’s eyes open wide with fear, but luckily for her the man was too surprised to make a move before Harry’s spell struck him squarely in the face and paralyzed him.

As Harry made sure every one of the Death Eaters was in a full body bind, his mind briefly recalled the look of horror Hermione had given him before she ran off to Ron. Harry hoped that this time she was horrified enough to leave him, but he doubted it. She would probably stay mad at him for a few days, but the next time he went off to fight Death Eaters she would be with him. And so would Ron. For a moment he felt relief for their continuous support, before he steeled himself. He’d rather they left him, but they wouldn’t. He’d managed to get almost everyone away from himself, but every time he tried to tell them to leave him they would end up having a fight, after which nothing had changed. A few times he had almost petrified them, feeling the only way to get away from them was to leave them behind, but he never did.
I’m too weak. Merlin!, I’m still not there. I have to be strong, have to send them away.
-But you need their help. Hermione’s research capabilities are almost unmatched, and Ron’s a strategic genius. And they're both great wizards too.

I’m only endangering the two of them.
- They choose to be in danger!
Just look at Ron!

Following up on his own trail of thoughts, he glanced at his two comrades. Sure enough, Ron was already sitting up straight, looking bruised and battered but not too worse. Harry didn’t know whether to be relieved or annoyed; Ron in St Mungo’s might have been just what was needed to drive them away. They were his two greatest liabilities; today he almost hesitated before paralyzing Hermione’s attacker, and hesitation could cost him his life one day, could cause Voldermort to win, could cause him to lose the final fight.
Could cost the world the victory it deserved.
Could cause those he once loved to get hurt.

"You okay, Harry?" he heard Ron call out. Returning to the real world he noticed he had kneeled on the ground near the body of one of the Death Eaters. He couldn’t remember kneeling down, but he quickly stood up.
"Can you travel?" he asked briskly instead of answering. When Ron nodded, Harry continued. "Good. I want to go back now. Come here."
Both shot him angry looks, but did as he told them and laid a hand on his shoulder. Even though Hermione was the only one legally allowed to Apparate, Harry was always the one Disapparating as the other two Side-Along-Apparated. He refused to tell them where they were going, and he always Apparated somewhere else to prevent an ambush. From where they were Apparating tonight, it would only be ten minutes flying to Privet Drive. He felt tired, and didn’t want to have a long flight or a two- or three-part Apparition to get back as he did sometimes. He felt like he was wrung and hang out to dry, and longed for the solace of his bed. It was becoming harder to keep his face in check, to keep it from showing how tired he was. He didn’t want Ron or Hermione fussing over him. He didn’t even want them near him.

I really should send them away he thought, before Disapparating.
