Hogwarts Castle was still and quiet, anticipating the arrival of the few students who dared to enter its walls. Professor Minerva McGonagall stood at the window of her office, watching the tower of smoke the train emitted catch the wind in the distance.

She sighed, looking sadly at the portrait of the man who should be in this office now. Albus Dumbledore sat in his portrait, his head rested against his chest, snoring faintly.

Minerva sighed. She didn’t think she could cope, seeing her beloved Hogwarts near empty. But she knew that she must teach the few remaining students.

Suddenly a thought came to her. It was her responsibility- no, duty, to teach these students how to defend themselves, how to fight You-Know-Who…

Minerva hurriedly got to work, planning how she would turn these Hogwarts students into defenders of the world.

Harry Potter stared out the window of the Hogwarts express grumpily. He was in a compartment by himself, since there were so many empty compartments students could have one to themselves.

And he didn’t really want to see the others.

Harry had not wanted to come back to Hogwarts. How was he meant to defeat Lord Voldemort at school? He only agreed to come after Hermione reminded Harry that Hogwarts had the resources to help him find the Horcruxes and defeat Lord Voldemort.

There was also a good chance one of them could be at Hogwarts, Harry reminded himself.

Suddenly he heard a faint knock on the door. Cate Lupin stood there, unable to keep a broad grin from her face. She had been extremely excited to finally be coming to Hogwarts, despite the fact that this year it would be completely different. It was also the new Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.

Cate walked into the compartment and sat down. “How are you doing?” she asked him, her violet eyes inquisitive. Harry sighed.

“I don’t really know. I said I wouldn’t come back to Hogwarts…But I guess I knew deep down I would eventually return.”

Cate smiled. “Just like I knew I’d eventually come!” she exclaimed. Cate and her father, Remus Lupin, had convinced the Ministry to let her come to Hogwarts. They reluctantly granted her enrollment, since the school was so small.

Suddenly Cate peered out the window and let out a cry of excitement. “I can see the castle!” She exclaimed. Harry jumped up, realizing he had to get into his robes. Cate had changed into hers as soon as the got on the train, as she was so excited.

Finally the train arrived at Hogsmeade station and the 20 or so Hogwarts students got off. Harry and Cate joined the others, who were having a heated debate over who was the best Quidditch Team. Well, Ron was lecturing the others on The Chuddley Cannons greatness.

Harry and Cate joined in, and they all got on a thestral drawn carriage. Cate stared at the Thestrals in wonder- she could see them, even though she hadn’t seen her step-father’s death, just seen the dead body. Harry pondered over this for a moment, before they began to discuss the most important topic- the Horcruxes, and R.A.B.

“Kreacher will be at Hogwarts Harry, so we can try get some information out of him. Dobby will help, I’m sure.” Hermione said. It was a mark of the seriousness of the situation that she did not mention anything about “Kindly gaining information from Kreacher”.

Cate however, was not taking part in the conversation. She was staring out the window with anticipation, unable to believe she was about to arrive at Hogwarts. She couldn’t wait to meet Professor McGonagoll, and all the other teachers, as well as seeing the Whomping Willow, the Room of Requirement, the Common Room, Hagrid’s cabin, especially Fang, who Hagrid had told her about when she met him.

In fact, every aspect of Hogwarts was exciting to her. But most of all, she couldn’t wait to see her father again. He had been away on Order business, but was supposed to be arriving back tonight. While he had been gone, Tonks and Mrs Weasley had been preparing the wedding, which was to take place at Hogwarts on New Years Eve. Cate was to be the only bridesmaid (Fleur had expressed her astonishment at this. One bridesmaid? How!), dressed in green apparently (It was originally pink, but Cate had expressed her horror at this,so it was changed to green). Everyone was extremely excited about this wedding, and Cate hoped that it would run smoother then Bill and Fleur’s.

Suddenly Cate was thrown from her thoughts as the carraige stopped. Her eyes widened as she ran for the door, unable to believe she was here, in Hogwarts.

They walked slowly in, the bunch of Hogwarts returnees. Harry looked around, peering at each face. He hadn’t had a chance to fully see who was still at Hogwarts.

He saw Ernie, who was looking rather pompous as he stood next to Hannah Abbot (Harry was surprised to see her back here!), behind them walked the Creevey brothers who were talking to Dean Thomas, after them came, to Harry’s displeasure, Cho Chang, holding hands with Michael Corner. There were a few students in younger years, as well as a few from his year he did not know all that well.

Harry frowned; how could Hogwarts run on this little amount of students? He sighed, realising that McGonagall would probably explain it all. They entered the Great Hall, and Harry looked over at Cate, who was looking rather awestruck, before gazing around the hall.

There was only two tables, one, he assumed, for the students, and one for the teachers. Half the teachers appeared to be gone; in fact, only McGonagall, Hagrid, Flitwick, Sprout and to Harry’s surprise Slughorn remained. He assumed that Proffesor Trewelany was in the North Tower as usual.

The students sat down, in silence, apart from Cate, who was nattering on to anyone who would listen about how great Hogwarts was. Suddenly Proffesor McGonagall stood, and even Cate went silent.

“Good Evening students. I am glad to see some of you have returned. I have quite a lot to say to you, but I feel that you should eat first. So, I shall save my words for after your meal.”

Harry stared at McGonagall in surprise. Her voice was stern as usual, but there was a weariness on her face, that he had not seen before. He brushed away these thoughts for a moment as he began to fill his stomach with all the delicious foods he had missed so much. After they had finsihed their meal, McGonagall stood again.

“Now, there is a lot I need to say to you all. I have decided to change the way Hogwarts works. The lessons will be changed. Everything will be changed. You will be leanring to defend yourselves against You- Know-Who.”
