“Come in.” Teddy sighed. He had rather been hoping that his godfather would not be in his study; that he could put this off for just a little longer with a valid excuse.

He gulped and opened the door to the warm study, heated by cackling, dancing flames in a small grate at the far end. His godfather looked up from his desk and smiled.

“Hey, Teddy. What’re you doing here?” Teddy looked at his feet.

“I… I need your help,” he whispered.

Harry looked at him, concerned. “What’s wrong?”

Teddy felt a blush rise on his cheeks as he went and sat on the creaky chair next to Harry, who turned to him with friendly eyes.

“What do you need help with, Teddy?” Teddy looked at him and felt like a small boy again, instead of the man he was.

Harry had always been there for him. It was Harry he sought out when he had a problem. It was Harry who always understood.

“I…” Teddy sighed. This was it. “I want to… I want…” Harry smiled encouragingly. “I want to marry Victoire.”

Harry blinked, shocked. He had expected Teddy and Victoire to get married some day, but they were still very young. All was silent, except for the solitary ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.

Teddy felt awkward, embarrassed… childish. He wished Harry would say something.

“Marriage?” said Harry at last. “Marriage is… well… that’s pretty big, Teddy.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“What happened to the little boy who insisted he’d never get married?” asked Harry. Teddy smiled, and thought back to when he was eight.

Teddy surveyed the picture with keen eyes, as Remus leant in and kissed Dora.

“Yuck!” he exclaimed, and Harry laughed.

“There’s nothing yucky about it, Teddy!”

“Yes there is! That’s disgusting! I’m never going to get married!”

“Why not? You seemed to like mine and Ginny’s wedding a couple of years ago.”

“I only liked the party afterwards – the rest was boring. Anyway, I wouldn’t get married, because the priest says ‘you may now kiss the bride,’ and then you have to kiss a girl!”

Harry roared with laughter. “Teddy, if you get married, then you love that person, and you want to kiss them.”

“Yeah, but I love Victoire, because she’s my best friend, but I wouldn’t kiss her because that would be disgusting. It’s unhi… unhygin… what’s that posh word Aunt Hermione uses for dirty?”

“Unhygienic.”

“Yeah, it’s that. Your lips have to touch. That’s disgusting.”

“Why?”

“Well… what if the girl I was kissing was just eating peas? I hate peas.” Harry laughed again.

“You’ll kiss someone one day, Teddy. You’ll marry someone too.”

“I won’t! I’ll never get married!”

“Yeah, you will.”

“Will not!”

Harry shook his head, smiling, and pushed the photograph into Teddy’s hands. “You keep that anyway, kid.”

“He grew up, Harry. He realised that he loved Victoire.”

Harry nodded, and smiled. “You sure you love her?”

“Definitely.”

Harry grinned, and suddenly pulled Teddy forwards into a bone crushing hug. “Teddy, that’s fantastic!”

“I haven’t asked her yet,” mumbled Teddy into Harry’s chest. “She might say no.”

“I very much doubt that, Ted,” replied Harry kindly. “Have you asked Bill yet?”

Ted blinked. “Asked Bill what?”

“Whether he’ll give you permission to marry his eldest daughter.”

“Er… I have to do that?” asked Teddy, looking very worried.

“Well… from what I remember, Bill and the rest of his brother’s are very… protective… over their family.”

“They… they are?” asked Teddy, now turning the colour of cold porridge.

“Don’t worry! He’ll say yes. He likes you,” replied Harry, ruffling his hair. “But, if you didn’t know you had to do that, what did you need help with?”

Teddy blushed. “Everything. I don’t know what to say, how to do it, and I don’t have a ring. I don’t know where to start. I was going to ask Grandma about it, but she’d probably tell Molly, and… well, I don’t want Molly knowing, for the time being.”

Harry nodded. “Understandable.” Harry hesitated. “Teddy… you are sure you want to do this? It isn’t a spur of the moment thing?”

Teddy scowled. “No! I’ve been thinking about it for months. I decided I wanted to marry her way back in May, when-” he cut off, blushing furiously.

“All right, then. Just checking. I tell you what – why don’t you and I go to Diagon Alley on Saturday and get a ring? We’ll sort out how you ask her later.”

Teddy’s face lit up. “Great! Er… shall I ask Bill before then?”

Harry nodded seriously. “Yes. Get him on his own, and ask him quietly. He’ll say yes, Ted; it’s just formalities.”

Teddy nodded and gulped. “You’ll come with me?”

“I think this is something you have to do on your own, Teddy.”

“Oh. Okay.”

***

It was Friday evening, and Teddy still hadn’t asked Bill. The entire Weasley clan, along with the Potter’s, Andromeda and Teddy were gathered outside on a long table, eating Molly’s delicious food by magical lanterns which hovered a few feet over the table. Moths danced around the lanterns, mesmerised by the flames within, and the low buzz of crickets accompanied the hum of conversation, the clink of cutlery.

Harry caught Teddy’s eye, and gave him a questioning look. Teddy looked guilty, and shook his head subtly. Harry rolled his eyes.

“I’ll clear the plates,” said Hermione at the end of dinner.

“No, no, Hermione – it’s fine. Teddy and I have got them,” said Harry hastily. She looked at him suspiciously as Teddy, who had been deeply engrossed in conversation with Victoire, sprang up and helped Harry collect up the plates. “Er, Bill, d’you think you could come with us? I need to ask you about a goblin. Nasty case at the moment, see.”

Teddy stared at Harry, horrified, but no one noticed as Bill rose from his seat and followed them in. Harry pretended not to notice the death glares Teddy was sending him as they hovered the plates in. With a wave of his wand, Harry set the dishes cleaning themselves, and then turned to Bill.

“I’ll go and get the case notes. They’re in my bag. I’ll be right back.” As he left the room, he encouragingly squeezed Teddy’s shoulder, who was looking as though he were about to faint.

“So, Teddy, how’s things at work?” asked Bill, obviously trying to make conversation.

“Um… I quit,” said Teddy, embarrassedly staring at his shoes. This was not the way to impress his girlfriend’s father. “It… it wasn’t the job for me. I might start work at a different owlery, but I think Harry said that there was a Magical Creatures store for sale in Godrics Hollow, so I might look into that. Um… Bill…”

“Yes?”

“Er… I was wondering – no, not wondering, I mean, I want, well, that is to say, I would like-”

“Done those dishes yet?” asked George, bursting in through the back door. “I’m still hungry – is there any stuff left over?”

“Try the oven – I think Mum left some garlic bread in there. You were saying, Teddy?”

“Uh…” Teddy found it very off-putting having George rummage around in the oven. “It… it doesn’t matter…”

“Don’t be silly. You might as well just tell me, whatever it is.”

“Yeah, but…” Teddy’s eyes slid over to George, and Bill seemed to get the hint.

“Oi, George. Just grab the bread and go, all right?” George looked around at Bill, wide eyed.

“All right, all right, calm down! Blimey, all I wanted was a bit of grub…” he wandered back outside, bread in hand, muttering darkly.

“Teddy?”

Teddy closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his hands trembling. “I… I would like your permission… to-”

“Bill? Bill?” Teddy groaned as Fleur came in. “I thought you were doing ze dishes? Hurry up, Arthur haz got ze wine out, but Molly won’t start until everyone iz-”

“Yes, I’m coming, dear. Harry’s just getting something. I’ll be right out,” said Bill. Fleur scowled and marched back outside, leaving a somewhat awkward air in the kitchen.

“Ted?” prompted Bill.

Teddy closed his eyes, beginning to break out in a cold sweat. He stared at his shoes as he whispered, his voice cracking, “Mr Weasley…” Bill’s eyebrows rose at the sound of being addressed so formally, “I would like…” Teddy took a shuddering breath. If this was what he was like just asking the father… “I… please would you give your permission… I would like to marry your daughter,” he blurted out finally. There it was over. He’d done it, he’d said it.

“You want to marry Vicky?” asked Bill slowly.

“Yes… yes, I would like to very much. I love her… more than anything. Will you give me your permission?”

Bill stared at him, an odd look in his eyes. Teddy could feel his heart beating nine to the dozen.

“No, I will not give you permission to marry my daughter.”

A/N Oooooh, a little bit of a cliffie there! Yeah, this chapter wasn't that funny, but they do get better, honestly. :) Please review, they make me happy! You do want me to be happy, don't you? Because if I'm not happy, I can't write funny stuff...
