Dear Diary,

I’m lying on my bed. My bed, not a dorm room bed, not the bed at mum or dads house, this is the bed I will call my own until I move out after graduation. My bed. It’s a nice thought, but I wonder how long it will last? I was so shocked to find out that Cass, my friend, is Cassandra my cousin! I’d been working myself up for weeks about who the girl was? How we would get along? Would she mind that I was a witch and she wasn’t? I guess we both don’t like to open up to strangers.

The last few days have been interesting. It’s felt like the year worth of little sleep is finally catching up to me. I hadn’t been for a run at all!!! Shocking isn’t it! I’ve been getting up last and going to bed first.

Today was the first morning I managed to get up before anyone else. I finally got to have my morning run. I didn’t get to go as far as I normally do. It’s amazing what a few days off will do… I’ll have to get back into it from now on.

Well I have to go, I’ve gotta write a letter to Sev…

Ray.

Dear Severus,

Thank you for the pep talk you gave me before heading to the train. It calmed me more than I imagined it would. The train ride home was good. There was a brief appearance from Malfoy, but the others dealt with him pretty quickly.

Now I’m sure your wondering how it all went? I was completely shocked! Cassandra my cousin, is Cassandra my Gryffindor friend. I can’t believe it, all this time we have been related and didn’t know. Well we should have guessed. I mean Gran gave us enough clues. I guess we were both trying to protect ourselves somehow and we just missed the obvious clues.

The house here is beautiful, it is humungous, I don’t think I’ve ever seen something so big… Well except maybe Hogwarts, but you get the picture. There is a beautiful beach and forest is surrounding it. The house itself… wow… I hope you can see it one day!

I can’t wait to get back to school I really miss everything! Will I get to see you over the holidays? I hope so, I think we will be going to Diagon Ally a few times; hopefully I’ll get to see you there.

Well I’d better go; Gran is calling me for breakfast.

Love
Ray

Dropping her pen back on the desk, Ray heard Gran call out that it is breakfast time again. She quickly stopped to post Severus’ letter with Bear, her owl. Poor Bear, she didn’t have much of a use for him over the last year, so he has spent a lot of time in the Owlery. Walking into the kitchen she gulped when she noticed that everyone was already there.

“Sorry Gran, I was just posting a letter to Professor Snape,” she said as she sat down.

“That’s all right dear,” answered Gran putting a plate of food in from of her.

“Morning Cass, what are you doing today?”

“I was going to be doing some homework in the library. What about you?”

“I think I’m going to go outside and explore, maybe do some gymnastics practice.”

~*~

Dear Diary,

Cass seems to be very studious. I hope I’m not interrupting her all the time asking questions on how I get around this huge home… I’ve been going running for hours every day… the beach is wonderful to run on, and gran casts a sun repellent charm on me every morning, so I don’t get sunburnt.

Gymnastics is proving hard to practice, I really need the equipment that is at the gymnasium, but I don’t want to ask for anything else. I mean they have already taken me in; I don’t want to give them any excuse to get rid of me.

I still haven’t heard back from Sev yet, it’s been a few days, and I thought that he would have written back by now. I hope noting has happened to him. I hope he writes back soon, I’ve been rereading his diary, I hope one day this is as soothing to someone as his is to me.

I can’t wait to get into the potions room here! I can hardly believe that there is one! Oh I’m soo excited, I’m bouncing on the spot! I hope Gran lets me make some potions this summer.

Gran seems really nice; she looks like what muggles picture as a witch, it’s almost funny. Most of my old friends from primary school would almost be scared of her… I think it gives her character…

Aunt Juliet, I haven’t seen much of her since I’ve been here, mostly during meals. She doesn’t say much, just sort of sits there... She looks like she is permanently lost in thought and very sad. I don’t know what is wrong with her. I don’t really want to ask, it seems rude to. I'm still an outsider, maybe one day I’ll find out.

Cass, it’s funny to look at Cass as my cousin now. We were friends when we left school and cousins when we arrived home. She is very quiet too, always off studying somewhere, or reading. I’ve seen her around with the house elf Rosie a few times as well. Hopefully we’ll get to spend some more time together. Even though we’ve been friends since New Year, I still don’t know much about her and I feel like as her cousin, even as family, that I should know more about her.

I’ve gotta go, dinners ready.

Ray.

Dear Diary,

Well it’s a new day, I still haven’t heard from Sev. I wonder if I should write to him again… Bear returned to me two days ago and there was no reply. Is it bad enough for me to use the floo powder he gave me or would that be infringing on his privacy. I don’t know what to do! I wish I had someone to ask these things to.

I spent the day in the library with Cass today. We didn’t talk much, but she helped me with some of my charms homework. I feel like a complete idiot compared to her, she is soooo good with charms and all the wand work! I can’t do any of it to save myself, I’m lucky to get a levitation spell to work. I don’t know how I got through the exams…

Running was fun today. I still can’t get Cass to join me, its funny to see how she will try to get out of it each morning… She doesn’t seem to be a sporty person… *giggle* I did about 10 miles this morning, I’m hoping to get out again this evening. I also have to do some stretching.

I spent some time with Gran today. She found out about my love for potion so she let me help with the drying of her herbs and potions ingredience. I’m hoping she might let me help her in the gardens too soon. Herbology is my second best subject.

Ray.

Dear… *sniffle* Diary,

I… I… just heard… from… *sniffle* Sev… he… he… he… doesn’t want me… I knew it would come… but… but… why now… why so… so… cruelly… I’m going to paste it in here…

Miss Jones,
Congratulations for your happy reunion. Please do not seek to contact me regarding this matter
Sincerely, Professor S. Snape.

~*~

Dropping her pen, Ray ran out of her bedroom, the letter forgotten and her diary wide open. The letter had just arrived, she had been about to start writing in her diary. So needing to vent, she let it out in there. It didn’t help. Gran had told her that she was to stay inside after dark. There were a lot of places for a little girl to get lost in around the huge estate.

Ray ran blindly through the manor, she didn’t care where she ended up. She only knew that she needed to get away, as far away from her room as she could. It had finally happened, what she had predicted since letting Severus in, he had abandoned her as well.

Turning a corner, Ray heard a piano playing softly. She stopped running and wiped her eyes looking around for where the sound was coming from. It was a happy and cheerful song, but it had a dark undertone, very hard to place. Walking towards where the music was coming from Ray found what she could only describe as a music room. It had a Grand Piano, a bookcase busting with what she presumed was music, and there were various instruments all around.

What shocked her the most, however, was seeing Cass sitting at the piano playing the emotional piece. Ray inched the door open so she could get into the room and stood watching and listening to the girl and the beautiful song. Slowly as it came to an end, Ray walked across the room towards Cass and said.

“That was beautiful, how long have you been playing?”
