“Okay, here’s how you’re going to do it,” Harry told Ron quietly as they were both getting dressed that morning in Ron’s bedroom. It was the summer before their sixth year, and they were trying to figure out ways for Ron to ask out Hermione.

Harry started, “After breakfast, you’ll be all-”

“Harry- pleeeeease don’t make it too obvious, everyone already knows that I like her, okay?” Ron begged. “If Ginny finds out, she’ll make my life even more hell than she already does!”

Harry shrugged. “That’s too bad. Anyway, after breakfast, you’ll say ‘Man, I’m full,’ to her, and then ‘Would you like to take a walk with me?’ But you only say that part quietly and then you two will get on your shoes and go outside and talk and kiss and hook up and- well, we won’t get into those details- and you’ll end up coming back as a couple.”

Ron glared at Harry.

“It’s just an idea,” Harry said.

Ron sat back down on his bed. “That’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard. That’s not romantic or sweet or anything at all! She’ll just run away.”

“Well, maybe we can broaden it a little bit.”

“How?”

“What are you two doing?” came Ginny’s voice from nowhere. Harry and Ron looked up at the door to see Ginny’s curious face peering back at them.

“Don’t you know how to knock?” Ron asked her viciously, both boys making sure that their pants were completely zipped.

Ginny closed the door, knocked on it from the outside, and came back inside the room. Harry laughed. “What are you two doing?” she repeated.

“We’re trying to figure out ways for Ron to ask Hermione out,” Harry told her, much to Ron’s displeasure.

Harry!

“Oh, come, Ron, I’m not going to say anything,” Ginny said, sitting on Harry’s bed.

“You better not!”

Ginny rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Anyway, what kind of things were you guys thinking of doing for her?”

“The only thing we have is that Ron can ask Hermione to take a walk with him after breakfast,” Harry said.

“That’s it? Only a walk? There has to be something more!” Ginny squealed.

Ron fell back onto his bed. “Like what?

Ginny scratched her chin in thought. “Harry, do you have any extra… what are they… baddaloos?”

Harry stared.

Ginny rolled her eyes. “Stay here,” she told them, and ran back to her room. She picked up a shiny round object from her desk that Dean had given her to listen to at the end of her fourth year, some Muggle thing that he called a “seedee”. He said that the “seedee” would work even though it wasn’t magical. She then ran to her dresser and took down the other gift he had given her- a magical “boom box”. He had explained to her how it worked and she continued to listen to the one “seedee” in it nonstop since. It didn’t need any “plugs” or “electricity”, according to him. Ginny grabbed both the “seedee” and the “boom box” and ran back to Ron’s room.

“Here, Ron, you can use this with Hermione,” Ginny said, showing the boys what she brought.

Harry’s eyes brightened as he reached for them. “Hey, this is a Boom-Box! I’ve seen some of these around Diagon Alley, that’s so nice that they make these things magical now. Where did you get this?”

“My, uh, friend. Do you think the seedee is okay with it?”

“Let me see… hey! Bryan Adams, this guy’s great! My Aunt Petunia has a few of his CD’s. How did you get this?”

Ginny hesitated to answer, but only because Ron was in the room. He would go mad if he found out that Dean was giving Ginny gifts.

“Um, er, a friend,” she repeated, snatching it back from Harry’s hand. “Anyway, Ron, you should show her this one song on it. It’s really beautiful. Here let me show you how it works. First you press this button here on the boom box to turn it on, push this button here to open the player, you put the CD in here like this, and then you just close the lid, press play, and you should get music.”

Ginny pressed play, and a piano started, and then a man’s voice sounded loud throughout the room.

That’s Bryan Adams?” Ron asked. Harry nodded.

“This is such a romantic song,” Ginny cooed as she listened more. “Ron, listen. I was thinking that you should bring this out with you on your walk and then you could just set it down somewhere, turn it on, and then ask her to dance.”

“That’s a great idea!” Harry said happily, turning to look at Ron.

Ron stared at them. “I can’t do that! I mean, sure, it’s a great idea and all, but it seems like some page ripped out of one of mum’s romantic-fantasy novels! It’s totally cheesy and pathetic.”

“What are you talking about? Hermione would be thrilled with this! Trust me- this is exactly how girls fantasize about romantic situations! She’ll feel like she was dreaming!” Ginny retorted at her dumb brother.

Ron grew quiet in thought, then said, “Don’t you think it would be a little obvious, me dragging this big thing all the way with us? I want it to be a surprise.”

“Well…” Harry pondered, “you could go and put it outside right now, and when you get to it on your walk, you could stop and put it on.”

“That’s so sweet, Harry! I wish Dean would do that for…” she stopped at the look on Ron’s face. “Hehehe… er… um... ANYway, I’m going to go eat breakfast. Good luck!” Ginny nearly ran out of the room before Ron could explode.

“It’s a great plan,” Harry said after a minute of silence from his red-faced friend, who nodded in agreement.

“I’m going to the bathroom,” Ron said suddenly, and left the room to Harry, who was looking over the CD again, wondering if Dean was the ‘friend’ who gave it to Ginny.

Ron and Harry stepped into the dining room, all dressed and ready for the day, but not before they tiptoed outside to find a spot to place the Boom-Box for Ron.

They found, when they came back inside, Hermione and Ginny already sitting at the table and giggling quietly to eachother, eating their breakfast. They looked at the boys, who looked back at them, and giggled some more.

Ron’s ears grew red. He hoped they weren’t laughing at him. He has chosen his clothes particularly carefully this morning, and was wearing a dark blue shirt and his best jeans. He had also gone to the bathroom, mussed up his hair a little in the front (he liked it that way) and took an extra long time to brush, using ten seconds on each tooth. He even sprayed himself with a little bit of Harry’s cologne that he found on the counter next to the sink. When Ron had opened the door to find Harry standing outside it, he glared more than ever as Harry smirked his way past him.

“I'll remember to bring you your own bottle next time,” Harry had said very annoyingly, sniffing the air as he closed the door. Angry as he was, Ron waited for him anyway because there was no way he was going downstairs by himself.

As Ron and Harry approached the table, Ron made sure to sit next to Hermione so he could ask her outside as quietly and unnoticeably as possible. All four of them had a breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon. Mrs. Weasley insisted to all of them to eat at least five more eggs each, but they all refused.

“Man, I’m full,” Ron said dramatically, making Hermione and Ginny stare at him. Harry had his hands over his face to shield his laughing. Ron’s eyes grew in warning to Harry, who responded by saying,

“Ginny, would you like to play some chess?”

“Sure,” she replied, knowing it was the cue to leave. She and Harry smirked at eachother and went into the living room to find the chessboard.

A few seconds passed, and Ron still had not asked Hermione. They were sitting in awkward silence when Hermione suddenly said, “I think I'll go and watch them.”

She stood up, but Ron caught her hand. “Hermione, wait,” he said, looking deeply into her eyes. He pushed his chair out and stood up next to her.

“I mean- would you take a walk with me?”

Hermione grinned. “I'd love to.”

“Excellent,” he grinned back. They put on their shoes and headed for the door. When they passed the living room, Ron looked at Harry and Ginny, who were both grinning at him. Harry then made an immature kissy-face at Ron while Ginny giggled silently.

Ron looked threateningly at them as he lead Hermione out the door.

*

It was a sunny day with a cool breeze, which, Ron thought, was the best day to ask Hermione out. Nothing could possibly go wrong on this day- it was too perfect. Neither of them had said anything for a while, so other than a few birds chirping, their outing had so far been completely silent.

“So, um, are you taking any different classes this year?” Ron piped up, struggling to make conversation.

“Just a few different ones, but I dropped Potions and I’m taking an advanced Arithmancy class.”

“That’s wonderful!”

“About the Arithmancy? I’m not too sure, it’s pretty hard work.”

“Well, that, yeah, but I was talking about Potions. I wish I could get away from Snape, but I was thinking about being an Auror and that meant potion making,” Ron said.

“I thought Harry was being an Auror,” Hermione said.

“We were both kind of thinking of it,” Ron explained. “What do you want to do?”

“Well, I really like Astronomy,” Hermione said, “But I want to continue S.P.E.W. after school… see how far it will go… I know you and Harry think it won’t work, but…” she ended quietly.

“Hermione, about that… I’m really sorry we were so stupid about S.P.E.W. We should have more been supportive… and we weren’t. I guess we thought that it just wouldn’t work because so many people own house-elves and find them so useful.”

“Well, I don’t think that’s good at all. It’s cruel and barbaric; especially the way that Winky was treated. And that wasn’t much of an apology,” Hermione said stubbornly.

Ron smiled to himself. “Sorry.”

Hermione pursed her lips but did not say anything else.

“Well,” Ron restarted, “there’s something else about that… which I haven’t told you or anyone else, including Harry.”

They stopped and slowly faced eachother. They had been walking along a small creek by the forest near the Burrow. Neither of them had noticed where they were or how romantic the setting was until then.

“Yes?” Hermione whispered curiously.

Ron looked into her dark eyes. “I…I thought the whole time that the idea was wonderful. You’re so caring and determined, and you never let anything get in the way of your dreams even when nobody else supports you. I’ve never known anyone like you, Hermione.” He saw that her eyes were dazzling. “I think you’re amazing.”

Hermione smiled, and Ron thought that there was nothing so beautiful in the entire world.

“Listen, I have something that I'll think- or hope, at least- that you’ll like,” Ron said. Hermione expected him to start rummaging around in his pockets, but was most surprised when he walked into the woods and came back with a boom box. “Lucky for us that we stopped right here where I hid it.”

“What are you doing?” Hermione asked, observing Ron as he set it on the ground. “Do you know how to work it?”

Ron nodded and pressed the ‘on’ button, and then the ‘play’ button. He stood up as the music started, smiled at Hermione, and said,

“May I have this dance?”

Hermione grinned. “It’s about time you asked me to a dance,” she laughed as she wrapped her arms around his neck and let him guide her along with the music.

Look into my eyes
You’ll see
What you mean to me
Search your heart
Search your soul
When you find me there
You’ll search no more…

“Ron, where did you get this song from? It’s one of my favorites,” Hermione said quietly as they danced.

“Ginny had it, she said some friend gave it to her last term.”

“How nice…”

...Look into my heart
You will find
There’s nothing left to hide
Take me as I am
Take my life
I would give it all
I would sacrifice…

They danced quietly for some more time, until Ron knew that the song was soon going to finish.

…There’s no love
Like your love
And no other
Could give more love
There’s nowhere
Unless you’re there
All the time
All the way…

“You know I mean every word this song says,” Ron told her quietly in her ear. She looked up at him. “I love you, Hermione,” he said, gazing deeply into her eyes.

I would fight for you
I'd lie for you
Walk the wire for you…

“I love you, too.”

…Yeah, I'd die for you…

Ron and Hermione leaned into eachother and finally shared their first kiss.

…You know it’s true
Everything I do
Ooh… I do it for you.
