The train had begun to settle into the familiar humming pattern of its engine. It roared as it had come to life and now, with the comfort of time, had begun to purr gently. Its crimson sides flashed with the words “Hogwarts Express” and its black smoke billowed out. Inside, it held students in black robes and pointed hats, each brandishing a wooden wand.

In the last compartment sat three girls and four boys. Two girls looked pleased at their companions while the third sat quietly, gazing out the window at the scenery. Across from her sat a raven haired boy with glasses. His name was James Potter and he was tall and built strongly with flashing blue eyes. He laughed at the jokes of the boys beside him. One looked very much like him only sans glasses and with dark brown hair. Another had sandy tresses and a weathered, tired look about his face. His eyes, however, gleamed with light. The fourth was a small young man, with pale blonde hair and eyes that skirted around the compartment nervously.

“So how was your summer, ladies?” The dark brown haired boy asked. His name was Sirius Black, though serious he was not.

The girl with long brown hair and shining eyes responded to him. “It went by all too quickly. Merlin, what wouldn’t I give to be back at the beach.”

“I bet, Kaitie. You probably had all the guys running after you.” Sirius laughed.

“Oh but I did!” She winked. “They were all so sweet and gorgeous. Honestly Siri, they gave you a run for your money! They were just so cute.” Kaitie sighed and then smiled widely at Sirius. “And of course I’m sure you know that Lily and Blue had so many more than I did. See, I had to tell them that I had a lovely boyfriend back home in England but not many listened to me. But don’t worry, Siri, I was good. But I can’t say the same for Lils and Blue!” She laughed as Sirius smiled at her and placed an arm around her shoulders.

The girl near the window, Lily Evans was her name, didn’t acknowledge what was being said. Instead, she just pushed her shoulder-length red hair back and focused her green eyes once again out the window.

The other girl, Blue Elsing, began laughing at the mention of the beach and the boys. She began thinking of all the compliments and free drinks. And of the gorgeous, gorgeous boys.

“Blue was quite the popular one.” Kaitie began. “She had thousands of guys begging her to ‘please, oh please let them escort her’! Merlin, I felt like I was in Scarlett O’Hara’s time! It was hilarious! They would come round at night, throwing rocks at her bedroom window as though she were bloody Juliet!”

“I see someone’s been busy reading good literature while tanning, eh Kaitie?” The sandy haired boy, Remus Lupin, said with a small wink.

“But of course, Remy dear. It’s not like I could have avoided it. You see, while these girls were busy flirting, I was thinking of my lovely boyfriend and how I missed him. And so I wouldn’t be too sad, you know, I began reading all those books you told me I should. And Merlin if they weren’t long! And I felt bad, not having read the very book I was named for. Scarlett was rather evil, wasn’t she? Those boys in her life were quite like the ones on the beach but I decided it was healthier for Sirius and I to have me reading instead of flirting with some lovely bloke from America.” Kaitie sighed. “And oh was he lovely.”

“He really was. And he was a great kisser!” Blue added. “Those Americans.” Remus looked downcast for a moment before she, laughing, said, “But of course, he wasn’t as cute as certain British boys whose names begin with the letter ‘R’!”

“Oy, what about me!” Sirius shouted.

“Very well, the letter ‘S’ too.” Blue said.

James looked mad. “No American can be cuter than me!” He said teasingly.

“Alright… ‘J’ too.” Blue smiled.

“Good.” James said cheerfully.

The blonde haired boy didn’t say anything. He just looked down. His name was Peter Pettigrew and he was quite used to these turns of events.

“Earth to Lily.” Sirius called out.

Lily jerked a little. She looked over at him and said, “Yes?”

“How did you think your holiday went? Kaitie and Blue seem to have had a great time chasing boys…” Sirius began but Kaitie quickly broke in.

“Being chased, Siri dear, not chasing.”

“Very well, Kaitie. Being chased. So did you have fun?” Sirius asked.

Lily thought for a moment. “Yes, I did. It was lots of fun being able to relax and not think about coursework. Of course I did do a little work but it was still really nice to be able to relax.” She got a devilish smile on her face. “And the boys. They were… breathtaking.”

James slumped down a little in his corner while the others began laughing.

“How many boys fell in love with you, Lily? Or at least how many told you?” Blue asked. “There was Jason O’Reilly, Matt Conway, Louis Jacobs, Paul Walkner, Demetrius Handley, Greg Sanders…”

“You’re forgetting Charles and Daniel Cole! You know, the twins from Australia who told Lily they’d simply DIE without her!” Kaitie added.

Lily smiled. “And then there was Chase.” The other girls smiled and nodded. He needed no last name.

The four boys began to nudge each other. Who was this ‘Chase’ fellow?

“Chase was Lily’s serious summer fling. He was from America and absolutely gorgeous. Honestly, he looked like he belonged in a movie mag. He was that wonderful looking.” Blue supplied.

“And he was the one that every girl wanted. He was just amazing.” Kaitie grinned. “And of course, Lily here got him.”

Lily blushed before changing the subject. “How about you boys. How did you spend your holiday?”

“Well… it went well. We went to America for a bit and got to know a few gir—people rather intimately.” Sirius said.

“Did you really? Then tell us about your summer flings.” Lily replied.

“Alright. Let’s see. We stayed with James’s mother’s best friend, Mrs. Annabelle. And she had three daughters, all triplets that were our age! There was Amanda, Bridget, and Cheryl. Amanda had the biggest crush on Jamie here. Bridge, of course, fell for yours truly. And Cheryl absolutely loved Remy’s accent. They were some beautiful girls, those three.” Sirius said.

“Were they now?” Kaitie asked, raising herself up from his arms.

“Not as lovely as you, my darling Kaitie Scarlett!” He shouted.

“Good.” She settled back down.

“Well anyway, Mandy was so depressed when we left because, gorgeous though she was, Jamie here refused her. He’s too caught up on…” Sirius trailed off.

Lily knew Sirius was talking about her. But she didn’t care. Too bad James hadn’t fallen for that girl. It’d have saved her a lot of worrying.

“So who made Head Boy and Girl this year?” Remus asked to change the subject.

“I’m Head Girl.” Lily said modestly.

“I’m Head Boy.” James shrugged while inside he was ecstatic. Him and Lily, working together on all the projects! In fact, they’d even have to hang out outside of class in order to plan all the balls! How great was life?!?

“Congratulations, James.” Lily said.

“Thank you. Right backatcha.” He replied.

Silence fell over the group. Kaitie was leaning on Sirius and he was whispering in her ear. Remus and Blue were talking in a corner while Peter was dozing off. James and Lily sat there, not speaking.

They reached the school in record time, perhaps twenty minutes after the end of their conversation. The seven had changed into their school uniforms and were already seated in the Great Hall by the time they felt the first pangs of hunger.

The Great Hall was filled with students, ranging in age from eleven to eighteen. The ceiling of the Hall was a plain gray, which caused the students no end of boredom while staring at it during meals. There were long wooden tables with benches on either end. Floating candles lit it.

A man stood up. Though he was obviously elderly, he showed no signs of weakness or tiredness. He had long gray hair and bright blue eyes that peered over half moon glasses that were perched on top of a long and thin nose. He had a wide smile that he showed to the students sitting before him. Whispers gathered around the Great Hall as the first year students were introduced by their elders to the great Professor Albus Dumbledore.

“Welcome students. I know the time for speeches is not now but I would like to introduce to you the new Heads. Both from Gryffindor, please give a round of applause for Miss Lily Evans and Mister James Potter!” He waved a hand toward where they were seated. “Do stand.” He told them.

Lily and James stood up and were instantly immersed in applause. Catcalls and whistles for both of them were offered by the many that had an unfortunate crush on the pair.

“Thanks everyone. We’re hoping to have a great year.” Lily said to the masses.

“Now let’s dig in, right Professor?” James called out.

Dumbledore smiled. “Right, Mr. Potter.”

Instantly plates overflowing with food appeared. The seven instantly began to eat and conversations turned to the first years sitting near them.

“Is this what meals are like here all the time?” One little first year girl asked Lily.

“Yes… only without so much ceremony. Meals have certain times and you eat whenever you can come down during them.” She answered.

“What about a kitchen?” The little girl asked.

“They are strictly off limits. Sorry.” Lily replied.

“Only to those who don’t know where they are.” James cut in.

“Excuse me?” Lily looked at him.

He cleared his throat. “I mean, only the people who don’t know where the kitchens are have them off limits.”

“You know where they are?”

“Perhaps.”

“But we’re not supposed to know.”

“Come off it. There’s loads we’re not meant to know.”

“I don’t believe you do know.”

“Don’t you? Where do you think the food we’ve had at all the parties is from?”

“I thought… I don’t know. I never bothered worrying about your more dubious adventures.”

“That’s the problem with you, Lily. You never bother worrying about having adventures.”

“I do so. And we are not having this discussion.”

“Fine. What are we discussing?”

“You knowing where the kitchens are.”

“Fine. You wanna discuss that, great.”

“I don’t believe you know where they are.”

“Sure I do.”

“No you don’t.”

“You want me to prove it?”

“Actually, yes.”

“Fine. I will.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“What time and where do you want me to meet you?”

“Midnight and in the Common Room.”

“Fine.”

They both glared at each other while the first year girl just sat there staring at them.

“Welcome to Hogwarts. You’ve just witnessed your first Lily and James fight.” Sirius said to the girl. “I’m Sirius Black.”

She smiled nervously at him. “I’m Loren Sachs.”

“Pleasure to meet you, Loren Sachs. These are my mates, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and the git you heard arguing is James Potter. That’s his fiancé-to-be, Lily Evans. Over here’s my girlfriend, Kaitie O’Hara and Remus’s girl only she doesn’t know it yet, Blue Elsing.”

“Hi everyone.” Loren said timidly.

“Hey Loren.” The others chorused, all apart from James and Lily.

James and Lily were still glaring at each other twenty minutes later when Professor Dumbledore dismissed them. And still after that when they left the Common Room (separately, of course) at ten o’clock.

And when the clock stroke midnight and James was sitting in the Common Room in the darkness, not expecting to see Lily.

But there she was, walking down the staircase in a white tank-top and a pair of boxer-shorts.

“Didn’t think you’d have the guts to show.” James said to her.

“Didn’t think you had the brains.” Lily retorted. “I didn’t come down here to exchange insults. Show me the kitchens, if you really know were they are.”

James just smiled. “I do. But first, let me compliment you on your choice of sleepwear. The shorts do show of your assets.”

Lily turned a furious shade of red. “Why you…” She trailed off when she saw him tapping a piece of parchment. “What are you doing?”

“Shut up a moment.” He said before quickly adding, “Please.”

Lily became quiet as he tapped the parchment.

“Perfect. No one’s out.” He said. “Now come on.”

Lily walked towards him and was about to leave the room when James walked towards her.

“You’re planning to go out without any cover?” He asked.

“Um yeah?”

He shook his head. “Come here.” He placed a silvery cloak over her. And then, horror of horrors, placed it over himself.

“What is it?” She asked.

“Invisibility cloak. Now be quiet and stick to me.”

“With you, you mean.”

“No. Literally, to me.” He placed an arm around her. “This isn’t for my pleasure, Lily. It’s common sense. If we’re close together, the chances of us being seen are lessened.”

“Fine.” She said, fuming.

They walked along the dark corridors of the school. There were portraits hanging on every wall and the occupants dozing off in relative states of comfort. Lily glared at each of them as she passed, angry that they got to be comfortable while she was stuck with Potter. The thought that ninety-nine percent of the girls at Hogwarts would willingly kill for her very spot beside him never crossed her mind.

After walking for ten minutes, they came to a large still-life of fruit. James reached out and tickled a pear. Lily gasped. The pear had turned into a doorknob!

“And these, Evans, are the kitchens.” He whispered as he flung open the portrait turned door.

They entered a large mostly wooden room filled to the top with wonderful foods and smells. Little elf-like creatures jumped around, eager to please.

“Mister Potter! Dinky is happy to see you! Dinky is!” One little creature shouted.

“Hullo Dinky. How are you?” James asked with a grin.

“Dinky is doing good, Mister Potter! And who is Mister Potter’s friend?” Dinky yelled.

“Dinky, this is Lily Evans. Evans, this is Dinky.” He looked at Lily’s confused expression. “He’s a house-elf.”

“Pleased to meet you… Dinky.” Lily said.

“Dinky is happy to meet you Miss Evans! You is who Mister Potter love, isn’t you? Dinky is hearing lots about you, Dinky is!” Dinky shouted happily.

Lily blushed furiously and then turned to James. “You’ve been telling them who I am?!?” She asked angrily.

“Miss Evans is not mad at Mister Potter! Dinky is knowing you because Dinky sees you at Hogwarts!” Dinky said.

“Oh alright…” Lily shrugged.

“What does Mister Potter want today, Dinky is getting whatever Mister Potter wishes!” Dinky yelled.

“Can I get a large…” He looked at Lily. “What’s your favorite dessert?”

“A pecan pie.” She answered.

“Can I get one large pecan pie, please? And two mugs of butterbeer and then one care-package for the others?” James asked.

Dinky was instantly surrounded by ten other house-elves. They ran about, getting the food ready. Within five minutes, Lily and James held two baskets of food apiece.

“Thanks everyone.” James said as he turned to leave. Lily couldn’t say a word. She was flabbergasted.

They set out back to the Common Room in silence but when they reached it, Lily began to speak.

“You really do know where it is.” She said in awe.

James shrugged. “Told you.”

“I didn’t believe you.”

“Big surprise there.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“When have you ever believed me?”

“Um…”

“That’s what I thought.”

“Oh like you’re some poor lovesick bloke! You’re constantly asking me out for laughs!”

“First off, it’s not ‘for laughs’. Second, when was the last time I asked you out?”

“Last year and that’s only because this year just began. And what do you mean it’s not for laughs!”

“I mean I honestly do like you.”

“Do not.”

“Do so.”

“Oh shut it. You know this is all because of that stupid dare Sirius gave you back as third years!”

“Is that what you really think?”

“Well it’s the truth!”

“No, it’s not.”

“Then fine, tell me the truth!”

“No.”

“What?”

“No. You’re too content thinking that I’m some stupid prick who only wants you because of a bet. You don’t want anyone to get close to you and that’s that.”

“That is NOT that!”

“Yes, it is.”

“Merlin, you’re full of lies!”

“Oh quit it, Evans. You know I’m telling the truth. And I know you know.”

“You’re lying.”

“Nope.”

“Fine, then tell me why you like me.”

“Only if you tell me why you hate me.”

“Deal.”

“You first.”

“No. You.”

“Fine.” And James began. “You’re smart, pretty, funny, cocky, intelligent, interesting, fascinating. You’re talented and kind. You believe whatever you want, no matter how wrong it is. You’re stubborn, hard-headed, argumentative, mean, and perfect. You’ve got green eyes that just light up when we start to argue. You’re brave. You’re extremely silly in certain things. You love your friends. You’re just… I don’t know. You’re wonderfully cruel to me.”

Lily sighed.

“Your turn.” He said.

“Alright.” She felt a little bad, saying that after he complimented her, oddly but he still complimented her. “You’re stubborn, foolish, cocky, argumentative, only out for laughs, gorgeous, pig-headed, mean, brave, silly, annoying, and completely horrid at times!”

James began laughing. “Gorgeous, am I? You hate me because I’m beautiful?”

Lily glared at him for a moment before bursting into laughter. “I guess so.” She said.

After their laughter subsided, James looked serious. “I guess we don’t really have any reasons to be friends or enemies.” He said.

“I guess not.”

“But we could, you know, be friends, right?”

Lily thought for a moment. “We could try. If you promise to never ask me out again.”

“What if you want me to?”

She smiled. “Like that will happen.”

James was hurt for a moment but didn’t show it. “You never know.”

“Okay, if I ever want you to ask me out… I’ll… um…”

“You’ll wear a lily in your hair.”

“A what? Whatever. I’ll wear a lily in my hair.”

“Good.”

“Now good night.” Lily dashed into the Common Room with her two baskets off food.

The next morning, while waiting for Professor McGonagall to pass out their schedules, Lily and James were excruciatingly polite.

“Could you please pass the butter, Pot—James?”

“Here you are, Evan—Lily.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

It got to the point where their friends became increasingly worried for their sanity.

“You think someone may have hexed them while they were searching for the kitchens?” Kaitie asked nervously.

“No… but I think they might have snogged a good bit.” Sirius said, biting into a towering sandwich.

Blue, Kaitie, Remus, and Peter all began laughing.

“I don’t think that’s something we have to worry about.” Blue laughed.

Sirius shrugged. “You never know.”

“I think Kaitie’s on the right track. Someone could’ve hexed them.” Remus said thoughtfully.

“Doubt it.” Blue offered. “Why don’t we ask them?”

“Brilliant idea, Ms. Elsing.” Sirius said. “OY! PRONGS!”

James looked at him. “What?”

“What’s with you and your fair-lady?”

“Whatdya mean?”

“What’s with this niceness?” Kaitie butt in.

“Yeah, are you both ill?” Blue asked.

“Can’t two people be nice to each other? Or must we constantly be down each other’s throats?” Lily said, glaring at them.

“Not down each other’s throats, per say, but you’re acting above and beyond civil.” Kaitie retorted.

“Well I am so sorry for being nice, Kaitie!” Lily cried.

“Oh Lils come off it. You know what I mean.” Kaitie answered.

“Whatever, Kaitie.”

“Lilsy, don’t be angry with Kaitie. She’s a big-mouthed sweetheart. You know that!” Blue jumped in.

“Well once in a while maybe Kaitie should shut her mouth!”

“But then it wouldn’t be Kaitie, Lils. It’d be someone who looks like Kaitie, talks like Kaitie, but it wouldn’t be Kaitie!”

“Blue…” Lily started.

Unfortunately for Lily, Professor McGonagall had finally reached their table, ending all conversation except that of their classes.

“Ughhh, I’ve got Potions right after breakfast.” Sirius whined.

“Cheer up, mate. We’re all together there.” Remus said.

“And then stupid, stupid Transfiguration!” Sirius continued before receiving a look from McGonagall. “I mean, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL Transfiguration! after that.”

“At least we have a free double period after that.” James said.

“True. I’ll be able to catch up on my sleep during Charms.” Sirius said thoughtfully.

Lily smiled. “And I’ll have my charming Charms partner, right Sirius?”

“Sorry Lils. I’ve got dibs on him.” Kaitie said, grabbing Sirius’s hand.

“Remus and I are working together, sorry Lily.” Blue said. “I promised him last year.”

James grinned at her. “Guess it’s you, me, and Pete.”

Peter looked down. “Actually I don’t have that class.” He said softly.

“I stand corrected. It’s you and me, Pecan.” James showed Lily the dimples that caused girls to faint.

“Who’s Pecan?” Lily asked as they started to stand up.

“You.”

“What?”

“It’s from your favorite dessert, a pecan pie.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“Alright then.”

“Great.”

“See you in Potions.”

“That you will, Pecan.”
