CHAPTER ONE: HOME COMING

Sally McHellen was sitting by her porch window waiting for Jack to come back from the training camp for the army. He was training to be in the reserves for Canada in the Second World War. He thought it was a great honor, but she thought he was likely to die if set in any place with war. She knew in her heart that the fighting would get worse before it got better. For the enemy had not yet reached Canada.
Jack's eyes glanced at his General as he handed him a letter. Jack nodded and went back to packing his bag stuffing the letter in the worn green duffel bag. He had eight minutes to get on the trolley before it left without him and he would have to resort to his feet that were already blistered and torn because of the training. He had his heart set for home but knew it wouldn't be as warm of welcome as he hoped; knowing that the letter he was given was for him to pack for Germany.
Sally waited. For she knew that Jack had something to tell her, something that would change their lives forever. She hoped it was that he would stay home with her, and be with her. She dreamed of days when he would come home and he would swing her around, and then kiss her. They would have 10 children and live in a house with a white picket fence. The days of war were no more and a new age beginning.
Jack ran as fast as he could barely making the deadline. He smiled at finally seeing a familiar face. His dads old buddy Joseph. “Jack.... is that you?”
Of course Joseph wouldn't recognize him he had been training for 12 weeks and now had stubble, longer hair and grew 5 inches. "Hello Joseph.... how's the farm?"
“Oh it's going ok, but boy you sure did grow up fast."
Jack just smiled but that soon faded away as he realized where he was. He sat in a seat closest to driver and he and Joseph talked until a question that he was not familiar with was asked. “So boy ... does this mean you’re going to the war?"
Jack hadn't even looked at the letter but he supposed he would, breaking Sally's heart. He dug into the bottom of his bag and pulled out the crumpled letter.
“You gonna open it boy?" Jack woke up from the daydream he had of how Sally would act. “Oh... um ... right." He gingerly ripped open the letter.
' Jack Morris, You are needed to get to be at fort Needham by January 10th 1941 to board a ship for France to battle in Ypres. You are to be in Battle uniform and packed. You are in the 9th quadrant. Thank you for joining. Long Live The Queen!'
His worst fear came true. He was going to war in only 3 months. Joseph patted him on the back, weither it was for pity, courage, or understanding Jack couldn't tell he was more worried about Sally.
It was another two hours before he got back to the small town him and sally called home. They weren't married but they were in love and it would break Sally's heart, especially since he planned to ask her for her hand in May, her favorite month.
The Trolley stopped and Joseph gave him another pat on the back. He came out of his daze and told Joseph his goodbyes. He was home, it wasn't much but it had his family so it was home. He saw a figure by the porch window and his heart jumped. He headed for the door hoping his family would recognize him but he mostly hoped they would still love him. His hand started to shake as he knocked softly on the door
Oh thought sally "He’s back, He’s back!"
She flung open the door and jumped into his arms. She looked up in to his face, and noticed that he was slightly pale, and she felt him shacking. She instantly asked him
"Are you staying home with us?" He didn't answer for awhile, but the tears slowly built up in his eyes. She took that as a no.
“Are you-g-g-going to war"? She asked shacking.
"Yes, I am going to France"
“When?"
“Three months time.”
“Why?”
“They need me.”
Sally was horrified. Her worst nightmare had come true! Her Jack was going to war, and she was powerless to stop it. She hugged him tighter and slowly started to sob.
The pain in her chest was real and she felt as though her heart may break in two. Then as suddenly as they began the sobs stopped. Sally lifted her head and said to Jack "I am going to give you one of my cotton handkerchiefs and I want you to carry it with you, in battle, to remember me."
Jack looked at her and bent down for a kiss when she stopped him and said
“Let me get it for you" and hurried up the stairs.
“Sal! Sally!" He called his voice harsh with seeing the pain in her eyes.
Why would this happen to him, he knew it was for his country but he never knew the impact until it mattered.
“Uncle Jack!!" a high pitched scream broke the silence and tension in the room.
He suddenly felt two small bodies clinging to his legs. He started to laugh instantly seeing to tiny faces peering up with glistening crystal blue eyes.
“Boys be careful, Jack just got back now be good and feed Billy the pig ok." a calm warm motherly tone came from a women in her late 20's early 30's.
Jack smiled as the two tikes pushed open the wooden door. The women gave him a soft, humble kiss on his cheek and he hugged her with all the love he could. His sister had been his only companion, since both of their parents died in a fire 10 years ago.
“Anne, I'm sorry I never, meant...”
“Save it Jack, you knew this would happen you were just to cocky with love to see it. Now go watch supper while I tend to Sally."
“But Anne!”
“Jack don't you dare rise your voice to me, you started this don’t bring it on this house to make up for what you've missed. As I said off with you to the kitchen, the foods going to burn."
As Jack ran to the kitchen Anne rushed up the stairs. She could not hear a thing but a light rustling in one of the rooms. She peeked in and there right before her eyes was Sally climbing a great height to her handkerchiefs box labeled 'cotton, only used for good' and she reached in an grabbed her oldest and most precious one, the one her mother made for her when she was a child. She turned around and noticed Anne.
She said "I know it may seem like I am mad at Jack but I am not. I am just hurt that he must fight in this God forsaken war! I want to give him this." she held the cotton handkerchief, “because he may need it."
Anne was shocked and mad because Sally had swore which was very unladylike and shocked because she was giving up the only thing she had from her mother.
“Come on lets go downstairs and give you gift to Jack, for he is watching dinner!”
Jack turned slightly after hearing footsteps from the stairs. After stirring the beans a bit more he pulled out the wooden spoon and placed it on the counter. Anne emerged with sally from the living room, just as the boys came in from outside.
“Daniel, Ben outside. I don’t care what you play, as long as no one gets hurt, or bullied ok?” She asked in a harsh but surprisingly firm voice.
“Sure mama we promise.” Ben said with a quivering smile.
As Anne went back to the beans, Sally came fully from the archway. She eyes still puffy from her crying earlier. Jack solemnly took her in his muscular arms, towering over her. They stayed their for another two or three minutes before his whole body became numb with guilt.
I did this, how could I do this to my family. I love her and Anne and the boys so why would I do it.
“Jack? Jack?” Sally’s innocent voice sounded muffled from their hold. Jack’s hold on her weakened, but he never lost touch. He finally released five minutes later when Anne called the boys for supper.
They all sat down Jack, Sally, Anne, Daniel, and Ben. The conversation was glum since the new arrival of Jack, and the ideas from the boys were continually shot down, since they mainly consisted of what he did in training.
Half way through dinner the door opened and the boys jumped out of their seats but were scolded soon after from Anne. A figure formed in the archway of the kitchen and slowly formed into a man with fishing pants and two cod in his hands.
“Jack? Is that you?” The man said in a scruffy voice that sounded too much like a seagull. Jack hopped out of his chair and gave him a hug.
“ It’s been a while Noah, how’s the docks?” Jack asked intrigued by the new arrival.
“ They’ve been great , went up a lot since you left.” He said as he bent down to give Anne a kiss.
“ EWW!!” both boys shuddered as they kissed and turned away., and every body started to laugh.
“Now aren’t I allowed to kiss my beautiful wife Anne Elizabeth O’Brian?” He asked mischievously as he started to tickle the boys until Anne gave him a deathly glare.
“No! Uncle Jack and Sally don’t!” Daniel said with a grin so wide it could fit the world. Jack and Sally just looked at each other and smiled.
After supper Anne and Sally went into the family room to finish knitting socks for the winter season while Jack, Noah and the boys finished cleaning the kitchen.
“Well, it’s been too long kid, why didn’t you come back for your week holiday?” Noah asked as dried one of the newly washed plates.
“ I guess it was just because I didn’t want to hurt you guys more by coming back then leaving quickly again.” He answered as truthfully as he could as he scrubbed the plate.
“But isn’t it the same thing as what your going to be doing when you go into war?” Noah pushed away the boys as they play fighted on the ground.
“Noah it’s not like I meant to hurt her, it guess I thought it would be longer and I would have time to marry her. And I thought that as soon as we were married it didn’t matter how dangerous war was that our love would concur how bad it gets." His hand slowly reached up to rub his head as it started to hurt from all the guilt he had.
“Jack, come outside with me for a second.” Noah insisted as he was already half way to the door.
“Anne! Me and Jack are going outside watch the boys!” Noah yelled from the kitchen.
“Fine! But you better be drillin' something into that boys head!" Anne said mustering all she could inside her to stay seated and not listen with a well toned ear.
Jack and Noah walked down the pathway that lead onto Welkin Lane, the same one he played down as he was a kid.
“Noah if you’re giving me the talk I already got it from Anne the day before I left. I know what I’ve done. I'm not grateful for it but I needed to do it. All my life Anne has been the one taking care of me and all my life I’ve huddled against that warmth to keep me going. But now I'm the one that’s offering warmth not only to Anne but to Sally and the boys, and it feels amazing knowing that they are praying for you each and every night for you to come home safely. To know that your risking your life to save them in a far distant but real way. If I don't do this I'll just be huddling behind someone or even love to make it. I want to prove to you, Anne, the boys, Sally, even to myself that I am stronger that when I first set out. And if it takes war to show that in me... then so be it”. His eyes held a determination that Noah had never seen before, sending a chill down his spine. Noah stood there and looked out onto the horizon.
Sally and Anne were talking about Jack going to war. Sally choked out “I don't know why Jack needs to go! Why can't someone else who does not have any fiancé or wife! Why Jack!"
Anne got mad she firmly said to Sally “There are other wives, girlfriends, fiancée’s, and Daughters who are going through the same thing as you! You have no right to feel sorry for yourself but for those who have already seen there boys off to war but have not yet seen then return! You can pray for the women who have lost one that they love and yet could not be there for his funeral! You could join the Red Cross and make packages to keep our men out there going with food and blankets. You can write Jack letters to keep his spirit up. You can do all that and more! But wallowing in self pity will get you nothing but a heart ache so great.”
“Your right" Sally whispered “I will try to help others like me. “ I am …” Sally lifted her head from the table "also going to make the next three weeks un forgettable for Jack."
"Good" Anne nodded, happy she got some sense into Sally.
The boys slowly started walking down the path, the glum tension around them started to diminish as they reached the house. With a hand on Jack shoulder they entered, but were soon mulled by Daniel and Ben coming at them in full speed. Jack sighed, he wanted so desperately to have what Noah and Anne had, but he knew it was to far away for imagination.
Sally came though the archway with a slight sense of pain in her eyes. Jack knew it was because of him and he hated himself for in. Sally was the only thing that made his day brighten. But know the effect was wearing down as he saw what filled her eyes. It wasn't hard for him to understand. With just one look into her eyes Jack could tell even like smallest change. He could read her like an open book, and she liked it. It meant that their connection was so strong she could hide nothing from him, even the smallest amount of pity now aching for release.
He stood frigid unable to move as he continued to search through her. Until she finally gave into him and hugged him with all the power she had, not caring what got out but as long as it was about him. Wave after Wave of emotion stuck him, beating at his heart he couldn't last much longer.
He lowered his hand, and bringing hers up with the slightest touch of his finger. As they kissed, passion filled the air, mending his broken down heart. Her lips were warm and inviting teasing him in the smallest way to make him love her even more. The kiss ended abruptly when laughter cut through the lust that filled the air.
Ben and Daniel were laughing and saying ‘ewww’ under there breath. Everybody laughed at the two boys antics.
Then Noah said "Come on boys time to put the cows back in the barn." The two boys obediently followed. Jack and Sally went into the parlor and sat down with some tea talking quietly.
