Alecto and Amycus Alecto and Amycus Gender Female and Male, respectively Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Alecto and Amycus are siblings (sister and brother, respectively) who participated in the assault on Hogwarts school. Amycus is described as being squat and lumpy-looking, with a lopsided leer and a wheezy giggle. They are possibly "the Carrows" mentioned by Snape in the second chapter. Amycus is a hero in Greek mythology. Alecto is one of the Furies, the Greek goddesses of revenge. Avery Gender Male Hair colour Brown Eye colour Brown House Slytherin Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer Richard Rosson First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Avery has known Voldemort since Hogwarts. He was also a Death Eater during Voldemort's first reign of terror, but avoided being brought to justice by saying he was acting under the Imperius Curse. After he rose again, Voldemort punished Avery with the Cruciatus Curse for his disloyalty. It is possible that there may be two Death Eaters named Avery--one may be the other's father. Sirius Black mentions that an Avery was one of Snape's friends in Hogwarts, and there was also one in Tom Riddle's class. The same applies for the Lestranges. Avery was the unfortunate one of the Death Eaters--he was tortured at least twice by Voldemort, and was also the unlucky Death Eater in the Department of Mysteries. In the Time Room, he was hit by a spell and fell into a bell jar that played with time. His head began to shrink to a baby's and then regrow, only to shrink again; he finally managed to get free, but his head was still in its baby form. But this stroke of bad luck gave Harry Potter very good luck--Antonin Dolohov, one of the most lethal Death Eaters, who single-handedly defeated Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Neville Longbottom--was robbed of his victory when Avery, confused and blundering, entered the room; Dolohov was distracted and Harry seized the opportunity to perform the Full Body-Bind upon him. Our last sight of Avery was him blundering around in the time room--it is assumed that he was apprehended, restored, and sent off to Azkaban. The Carrows Gender Unknown Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Pure-blood Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (mention) The Carrows are two Harry Potter characters who are Death Eaters. Their first names are unknown, however they could possibly be the siblings Alecto and Amycus. They are two of the Death Eaters mentioned by Severus Snape in the second chapter of Half-Blood Prince. They were said to have been amongst those who believed that Lord Voldemort was gone forever. Antonin Dolohov Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (mentioned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) Antonin Dolohov was one of the five Death Eaters who murdered Gideon and Fabian Prewett, who were Molly Weasley's brothers. He also tortured many Muggles and opponents of Voldemort during the first war. Dolohov was caught shortly after Igor Karkaroff, who named him during his own trial. He was sent to Azkaban, but escaped during the mass breakout of January 1996. He fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban prison. Because of his name, which is most likely Ukrainian, he could possibly be a graduate of Durmstrang. During the battle, he proved that he was one of the most dangerous Death Eaters. He single-handedly defeated Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Neville Longbottom at one time. He later in the battle got caught and was sent to Azkaban. Dolohov is a character from the War and Peace novel by Leo Tolstoy. Dolohov from the War and Peace is brave but rude, cruel and violent toward most people, but at the same time very loving and caring towards his mother and sisters. Antonin is a French name. Gibbon Gender Male Hair colour Blond Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Gibbon was a Death Eater who participated in the assault on Hogwarts school and set off the "Dark Mark". He was hit by a Killing Curse fired accidentally by the "enormous blond" Death Eater. Fenrir Greyback Gender Male Hair colour Gray Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Werewolf Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Fenrir Greyback is the most vicious werewolf alive. He considers it his purpose in life to contaminate others with lycanthropy. Children are preferred, as he can then adbuct them and raise them to hate normal humans, but he ultimately wishes to convert as many people as possible. Fenrir is also a cannibal, as he enjoys eating human flesh when he isn't in his transformed werewolf state. He is on Lord Voldemort's side in the Second War. Draco Malfoy claims to have connections with Greyback; he is "an old friend of the family." He uses Greyback to threaten Mr. Borgin in order to allow Death Eaters into Hogwarts--but, almost ironically, when the Death Eaters do come for the Battle of Hogwarts, Malfoy is horrified to find that Greyback is among them. It seemed that Greyback was a monster so terrifying that Malfoy feared what he could do--he had not intended for the "attack" to go that far. Greyback will often attack the children of people who refuse to cooperate (with him personally, or with the Death Eaters in general), and it was for this reason that he contaminated Remus Lupin. During the Second War, a young boy with the surname of Montgomery (whose elder sisters are at Hogwarts) was attacked by a werewolf, presumably Fenrir Greyback, and was killed, after his mother had refused the Death Eaters. Werewolf victims usually survive (as werewolves), but are sometimes killed if the werewolf gets carried away. At the Battle of Hogwarts, Greyback struck viciously--he had bitten Bill Weasley (when he had not transformed, so Bill will not turn into a werewolf). He left Bill barely recognizable, and Lupin noted that it was an extraordinary case and "they might notice wolfish characteristics in him". Fenrir Greyback is named for the monstrous wolf Fenrir, whose release in Norse mythology heralds Ragnarok. The mythical Fenrir is the son of Loki (god of mischief and foster-brother of Odin) and the giantess Angrboda. He eventually kills Odin, who is then quickly avenged by his son Vidar. "Greyback" is an obvious reference to the grey fur of the average wolf. Greyback, towards the end of the battle, attempted to kill Harry, but Harry was able to place the Full Body Bind curse on him. It is assumed that he was one of the Death Eaters who was captured during the Battle of Hogwarts. With Greyback captured, the werewolves who are loyal to Lord Voldemort are now leaderless, perhaps allowing Lupin to convince them to abandon their vicious ways, as Dumbledore wanted him to do in book six of the series. Grindelwald Gender Male Hair Colour Unknown Eye Colour Unknown School Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Unknown (Dumbledore's enemy) Film Portrayer None First Appearance Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (mention) Grindelwald was a Dark wizard before Lord Voldemort and his only mention is in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Albus Dumbledore's Chocolate Frog card which notes that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945. It has been speculated that, since 1945 saw the end of World War II, there may be a connection between Grindelwald and Adolf Hitler and so it is possible that Grindelwald was head of the magical wing of the Third Reich, or even that Adolf Hitler was acting under the Imperius Curse. This is further supported by the fact that "Grindelwald" is a German-sounding name, "Wald" meaning "forest" in German. (Grindelwald is also a place in Switzerland where Richard Wagner---whom Hitler admired---lived.) It is also important to note that Grendel was a monster in the epic poem Beowulf. Even one of Dumbledore's middle names is Wulfric, talking part of Beowulf's name. J. K. Rowling has since indeed indicated that there was a global wizarding war taking place at the same time as World War II and that the two fuelled each other. [1] Some fanfiction authors try to expand Grindelwald's character, and to tie him in with the present-day characters. It is unclear whether Grindelwald will be significant in any way in the upcoming book, but Rowling has confirmed that he is dead. It is speculated that Grindelwald could have met the young Dark wizard Voldemort (who would have been in his teens) prior to the former's defeat by Dumbledore. It is possible that Grindelwald used horcruxes. Jugson Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Jugson fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban Prison. Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange It has been suggested that this article or section be merged into Bellatrix Lestrange. (Discuss) Template:HP characters Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange are a pair of Death Eaters. They are brothers, and Rodolphus is married to Bellatrix Lestrange. Alongside Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr., the two brothers aided in the torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom, driving both of them into insanity. All three Lestranges were formerly imprisoned in Azkaban until their escape, along with several other Death Eaters. At the end of the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Bellatrix Lestrange is responsible for the death of Sirius Black in the Battle in the Department of Mysteries. The Lestranges, specifically Rodolphus and Bellatrix, were mentioned by Sirius Black has having been among Severus Snape's "friends" at Hogwarts. A Lestrange was also part of Tom Marvolo Riddle's class. This Lestrange is most likely either Rabastan or the father of the Lestrange brothers. Near the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, a message signed R.A.B. is found. Some have interpreted these initials as "Rodolphus And Bellatrix"; however the writer refers to him/herself in the singular and it is highly unlikely that either Lestrange would try to destroy a horcrux. While not all theories on R.A.B.'s identity involve the Lestrange family, another guess is that these initials mean "R.A.B"astan (Rabastan) Lestrange. It is considered most likely that R.A.B. is actually Regulus A. Black, a member of the Lestrange/Black family. See Bellatrix Lestrange for more details. Walden Macnair Gender Male Hair colour Black Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer Peter Best First appearance Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Walden Macnair is a Death Eater who also has a job within the Ministry of Magic as an executioner for the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures, and was assigned with the task of executing Buckbeak in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He also served as one of Lord Voldemort's envoys to the giants, and it seems he helped to persuade them to join forces with the Death Eaters. He also fought in the battle in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and was wounded by Neville Longbottom when Neville poked Hermione Granger's wand through the eyehole in his Death Eater mask. Mulciber Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (mention) Mulciber fought in the battle in the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban. He was originally captured before Igor Karkaroff came to trial, but escaped in the mass breakout of January 1996. He is noted as a specialist in the Imperius Curse. Mulciber is the latin word for "melter", and was used as a name for the Roman god Vulcan (first by Vergil). Furthermore Mulciber is the name of one of the fallen angels in John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost. Nott Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Slytherin Parentage Pure-blood Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Nott is the father of Theodore Nott, a Slytherin student at Hogwarts, in Harry's year. Rowling mentioned on her website that he is an elderly widower. Nott was a Death Eater and after Lord Voldemort's fall, he wormed his way out of Azkaban, but joined him when he rose again in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Nott was involved in the battle in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and was injured. After being stunned by Hermione Granger, Lucius Malfoy ordered the rest of the Death Eaters to leave him there. Augustus Rookwood Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (mentioned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) Augustus Rookwood was a spy in the Department of Mysteries during Voldemort's first rise to power. Igor Karkaroff named Rookwood during his own trial, and Rookwood was sent to Azkaban but escaped in the mass breakout of January 1996. Rookwood fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. The character is described as having a pockmarked face in one of Harry's visions. He is currently in Azkaban prison. Evan Rosier Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Slytherin Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (mention) Evan Rosier (d. 1980) was killed by Aurors, shortly after Igor Karkaroff's capture. While resisting arrest he took a big chunk out of Mad-Eye Moody's nose in the process. Sirius Black recalls him as one of Snape's friends. Evan is Greek and means "of noble birth," appropriate for a typical Death Eater with pure-blood prejudices. Rosier is the name of a fallen angel (formerly holding the rank of Dominion in the angelic hierarchy). This demon may appear as either a man or a woman, and is a kind of patron devil of tainted love and seduction. The demon Rosier, is especially noted for assuming a human form of great physical beauty, and tempting humans to fall in love, so that they will therefore sin or act foolish. As the maiden name of the mother of Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks, and Narcissa Malfoy was Druella Rosier, it is possible that Evan Rosier is a relative, most likely their cousin. Travers Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (mention) Travers was a Death Eater, who, according to Karkaroff, killed the McKinnons. He may be the "brutal-faced" Death Eater seen during the Battle of Hogwarts. In Igor Karkaroff's trial scene, Barty Crouch notes that "Travers and Mulciber, we have"; as Mulciber is later seen participating in the Second War, it is likely that Travers, having been spoken of in the same vein, also survived and escaped. He may have been one of the escapees in the mass breakout of January 1996. Wilkes Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Slytherin Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (mention) Wilkes (d. 1980) was a Death Eater killed by Aurors. Yaxley Gender Male Hair colour Unknown Eye colour Unknown House Unknown Parentage Unknown Allegiance Death Eaters Film portrayer None First appearance Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (mention) Yaxley was, according to Snape, one of the Death Eaters who thought Voldemort to be dead. He may be the "enormous blond" Death Eater or the "brutal-looking" Death Eater in Book 6. He may be related to Lysandra Yaxley, mother of Callidora, Cedrella, and Charis Black, which would also make him a distant relative of the Longbottoms, Weasleys, and Crouches.
